I have been working on some decorations for my nephew's baby shower, and I wanted to use some of those party pom poms that have been seen all over. I found some on Etsy but they wanted $15 for 5 of them, so I decided to make some myself.
All you need are (for one pom pom) :
- 8 sheets of tissue paper in the color of your choice
- some twine, fishing line or whatever you want to use to tie it together. (It won't show anyways)
- and some scissors
- If you want grab some pretty ribbon to hang it (It will show) :)
Now the with the tissue paper you can get creative and do different shades of colors together to make an ombre effect or just do all one color. I looked at the Dollar Tree for tissue paper (because I'm cheap like that) and didn't find the color I wanted so I grabbed some at Wal-mart and they were .96! Go figure. But they came in packages of 6 so I had to get more than I was originally planning.
Anywho. You lay out 8 pieces of paper together like this:
Now just fold it accordion style like those fans we used to make when we were kids. Pinch it in the middle.
Take the string or twine or whatever and tie it together. It needs to be tight but not enough to make it squeeze together. Cut the ends off so they're not hanging down.
Once you have it tied you need to sloooooowly peel back each piece of tissue paper, so you don't rip it. Start on one side and then turn it over to the back and peel a piece back.
This is what one side looks like.
Then just turn it over and do the same thing to the other side. Slowly peeling back all the layers separately
.
Ta-da! I'm going to make 4 or 5 of these and hang them from the ceiling by the table decorations.
